NHTSA had identified fuel safety concerns as a result of rear impact damage and that some OEMs could add simple structures to prevent fuel leakage in future product generations. Ricardo was asked to select a number of vehicle models across multiple OEM’s and investigate what engineering solutions OEM’s had implemented to meet the enhanced FMVSS 301R ruling. Then establish the cost and weight impact of the solutions.
